Thankful for the Greatest Generation

Well folks, I got pulled away from my computer this week to run an errand for an old friend. I call it paying it forward. There have been so many times when members of the community, my family, and strangers have exhibited kindness and love towards me, more than I could ever repay. But I do want to try to pass on that goodness on to others I meet.

So I arrived at a stranger's door yesterday with flowers and a message. But she wasn't content to leave it at that, and I am so glad for it. We sat and talked for an hour and a half until her family came to get her for lunch. Her husband, daughter, and great grandchild all entered, filling the room with love and life. I hardly thought it could contain more love and life than with her just in it, but I was wrong.

She sat in front of me for most of our visit with her legs spread out and propped up on her sofa. Her face was often in a smile as she talked about all the things and people she loves in life. As I watched her, I noticed her beauty, spunk, and enthusiasm. I wanted to paint her in all her glory, in these golden years of her life. Her confidence radiated out of her with sublime ease as she sought to be known and get to know me, her new found friend. I feel like she really knows how to live, and live well. Somehow, I feel like I was the one who was blessed by being chosen for this particular errand.

Maybe that's the true secret of giving. It's like hugging in a way. You can't give a hug without getting one back. Some gifts by there very nature give back to you more than they could ever take to be given. Sometimes a break from the business is what we really need to remember how to live, and live well.

This holiday season, I am thankful for grandparents, mine, others, and those I have had the privilege to borrow over the last four years. They really know things I really need to learn. Thank you for your wisdom, for sharing, and for taking the time to love me well. Thank you for being the greatest generation. All of your grandchildren love you, even if we forget to say it sometimes.
